More the fame, more the hurt if they fall! Fear of failure keeps them on tenterhooks. Battling depression comes hand in hand with stardom in India. Hence the heroes and heroines in cine or fashion fields are the most depressed lot and take recourse to drugs and alcohol or suicide. To name a few - KLSaigal, Guru Dath, Meena kumari, Manmohan Desai, Parveen Babi, Divya Bharati, Nafisa Joseph, Jiah Khan (all Hindi), Savitri, shobha, silk Smita, fatafat Jayalakshmi, Viji , Monal, Kunal, Uday Kiran et all.
Some more names which I have missed, are here from the Times Of India(14thinstant) : "The archetypal Tamil comedian, the one-and-only NS Krishnan, literally killed himself at 52 by drinking to excess. He took the two years of incarceration in the Lakshmikanthan murder case in his stride. But the changing scenario of the film world in the fifties rattled NSK and he took the alcohol route for his exit. Chandrababu, who achieved star status as a comedian in the late fifties, tried to hide his angst over a broken marriage and a plunging career in alcohol, pethidine and a bohemian lifestyle. Premature death came as a release to the tortured soul ...He died penniless and the cost of his funeral was borne by Sivaji Ganesan.
In contrast, the indefatigable Nagesh was a survivor non-pareil. Nagesh was also a chain smoker and heavy drinker. The shadow of a murder case rocked his family life. But Nagesh managed to kick off his bad habits because of his self-confidence as an actor.
Surulirajan, who suddenly found himself in the limelight in the mid-seventies, died not due to any surfeit of angst but due to excess of alcohol and too many films.
But the talented Thangavelu kept a steady head during his spring and piled up real estate all over city and dale; his moment of reckoning came only later when there was a tangle in his family over his property."
