MBA in India or Abroad?
Do you think that an MBA degree is a PROFITABLE and VERSATILE career choice? After all, it costs you a FORTUNE to get through this program. And though there are a DIME A DOZEN institutes offering an MBA degree, you need to HIT upon the right business school (its curriculum CUSTOMIZED to suit the current corporate scenario). If statistics are to be believed, there are 1600 business schools in India offering two year MBA programs TARGETING mostly freshers with little or no experience to speak of.
Modern Managers
Now face it: Your MBA degree is not enough to get you to the top. It is a CONTRIBUTING factor but on its own will not TRANSFORM you into a wonder manager. What it gives is KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING from which would SPRING confidence and ability. The degree will provide a whole new perspective on business, an analytical approach along with a large network of business contacts. In that sense, an MBA is a COG in the wheel: it is one way of developing managers and an effective TOOL for moving from mid-ranking to senior positions. The degree may also come in handy if you are looking to start your own business venture.
“There is a great demand for MBAs in the investment and banking sector", says Mitsu, a wannabe MBA at a private institute. But ask Rahul Ramani and he will tell you that an MBA degree does not assure you a good job since it is “almost the same as a BBA course”. He elaborates, “There are far too many MBA graduates and not everyone bags the best jobs”. But Vinay argues, “Each degree has its own benefits, so why not an MBA degree? A good institute translates into good placements and a lucrative package.” Says Anchit Kapur, “An MBA is a useful value-addition for a student like me who also has a B.Tech degree.”
Business Sense
MBA programs teach students about leadership, money management, employee relations, and marketing. From middle management positions to executive careers, the WEALTH of opportunities are limitless. If the MNC LIMITS its search for upper level managers to those with MBA degrees, you are in LUCK with an MBA degree. Regardless of the career path you choose, your RETURN on an MBA depends on how much you want to DRIVE yourself to achieve your personal and professional goals. Abhinav looks to an MBA as “a valuable career asset” as does Deepak: “It improves your job profile tremendously. I am on to an MBA course for the placements it affords.”
Career Switchers
Since an MBA is one of the most COMMON professional degrees with applications in industries as DIVERSE as marketing, import/export, manufacturing and entrepreneurship, many students who don’t know what to do after college CHOOSE to pursue an MBA course. The general notion is: it is a TICKET to your dream job. Since SELF EXPLORATION and REFLECTION are key segments in an MBA program, it allows students to SAMPLE various fields without making any STEADY commitments.
Would an MBA help your CV?
An MBA tucked under your arm would help if
*Professionals in your chosen field have MBA degrees
*Your profession requires an MBA for upper-level promotions.
B-school Matters
A GREAT academic environment, good infrastructure, IMPRESSIVE placement records, TOP NOTCH teachers, SOUND business associations and FRUITFUL industry interaction will lead to a more PRODUCTIVE MBA program. Mitsu believes that students’ presentation skills, institute’s infrastructure and the QUALITY of group discussions and counseling are the primary factors that MAKE or BREAK an institute. Abhishek, an MBA aspirant, feels that a reputed institute MOULDS its student to excel at his job. He claims, “Practical orientation and not bookish knowledge should be the focus of the course.” Rahul calls for “more self development programmes” while Anchit emphasizes the need for “more qualified faculty or else institutes would continue to breed mediocrity”. Sanchet believes that students need “better industrial training and exposure to make their mark in the corporate sector” as does Pratik when he says: “More technical inputs would make the students industry-ready.”
Even though institutes offer full time and part time MBA courses, you should OPT for the one that is AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approved and affiliated to a university. With a whole host of specialised fields like marketing, human resource, operations and finance, an MBA can OPEN the doors to status, scope and money. So just seize the chance if opportunity comes knocking.
